In most places each step's rate applies only to the units inside it, so using more moves only the extra units to the higher rate. Egypt is different: once you pass 650 kWh, the whole month is charged at the higher rate, so the bill jumps.

Examples

Saudi Arabia, 7,000 kWh in a summer month, 70 A breaker

Your bill is about 1,598.50 SAR.

Dubai, 1,500 kWh, no water or housing fee

Your bill is about 462 AED.

Egypt, 300 kWh

The first 200 kWh at 115 piasters and the next 100 at 173 make 403 EGP, plus a 20 EGP service charge: 423 EGP.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my summer bill so much higher?

Air conditioning can triple your use, and the higher steps cost more per kWh. In Saudi Arabia every kWh above 6,000 costs 30 halalas instead of 18.

Do expats pay a different rate?

In Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Sharjah and Qatar the home tariff is the same for everyone in the calculator. In Abu Dhabi, the northern emirates, Oman and Bahrain, citizens pay less for their main home. In Kuwait the rate depends on the building: rented apartments pay more than private houses.

Why does my Egyptian bill jump above 650 kWh?

Above 650 kWh Egypt charges every kWh of the month at 241 piasters, and above 1,000 kWh at 274. Keeping use just under 650 kWh can save a lot.

What is the housing or municipality fee on my bill?

In Dubai it is 5% of your annual rent and in Abu Dhabi 3%, paid monthly through the utility bill by tenants.

How do I read my meter?

Write down the number on the meter, and again a month later. The difference is your use in kWh.
